All about Workzone and JCB Carbon Brushes!

A carbon brush is a sliding contact, which is used to transmit electrical current from a static to a rotating part in a motor or generator, and in DC machines. This ensures a spark-free commutation. Choice of brush plays a major role in the performance of the rotating machine.

Implementation of carbon brush
It is fitted in a brush holder designed to hold in an appropriate position and allow the brush to run on the surface of the commutator or slip ring (collector) to transfer electricity at an optimized performance.

Operating parameters

Carbon brushes work in three parameters, namely: mechanical, electrical and physical/chemical. Brushes made with high copper performs well with very low voltages and high electricity, whereas, brushes made with high carbon content performs well in high voltage and low electricity. Dense carbon brushes with low friction and low contact drop operate with very low losses and high electricity.

Various brush material grades

There are two major grades of brushes, including: electrographite and metal graphite. Electrographite are used for commutation and collection of biggest range of applications on DC drives and AC rings. Metal graphite brushes are used for collecting of low voltage application on low voltage or collection of high current.

Few tips on safety measures

It is essential that basic safety measures are observed. For example, ensure the machine is fully isolated before any work commences. Safety precautions and face masks should be used when bedding brushes.

Conclusion

Using carbon brushes, you can increase the lifespan of machines. They also act as self-lubricators. Search for workzone carbon brushes for use in electric motors, power tools and so on. For power tools drills, grinders, sanders, planers, multitools, and other power tools, you can use JCB carbon brushes.

All that you need to know about Einhell and Titan brushes!

How Einhell carbon brushes are put in use?

These brushes are good conductors of electricity enabling a highly stable and optimal level of electrical resistance. It contains good interlink power for a seamless flow of electricity amongst the parts. Einhell carbon brushes comprise of graphite/carbon powder. For maximum electrical conductivity and strength, electrolytic copper powder is used. Binders like phenol are mixed with the powder, which adopts to the shape when compressed.

When in use on mechanical and hydraulic presses, the brush compound is compressed by a tool with upper and lower punch die. A copper-wire is inserted several times through a hole in the upper punch and fixed to the compressed brush with the powder also pressed along the sides. This action is called ‘tamping’. This makes the brush more fragile and is called green brush.

How Titan brushes are put into use?

Titan carbon brushes are available in the market adequately and are used for drills and accessories, grinders, and other hand tools. Their commutation capabilities and resistance are high. Acting as good polishing agent maintains a moderate contact drop. These types of brushes can withstand high temperature and heavy to medium and less loads.

Benefits of using carbon brushes

Using carbon brushes provides good commutation and acts as lubricator and enables high consistency even at an extreme condition. It helps in good data transmission and is beneficial for carbon-based material for good performance. This helps in low maintenance expenditure, which is highly economical in service. Data transfer occurs with specialized electric brushes, Jcb carbon brushes, carbon brushes, motor brushes, electric mechanical brushes, or ordinary brushes.

How do brushes help in a DC motor?

Machines need motors to operate in good condition. Carbon brushes play a key role in DC motors enabling commutation. It transfers current from the rotating part of the electric motor. DC motor consists of more than one carbon brush with various terminals. Almost all the components help in conducting electric current between the moving parts and the static parts as well. For more effective functioning and for heavy use, consider evolution carbon brushes.

Grade-based use of brushes

Use of type of brushes depend on the base material. For example, electric brushes are categorized into several groups:
Amorphous carbon - used in electro-plating tools and suitable for small motors with high-speed revolutions.
Electro-Graphite - used for loading machines equipped with special material for unremitting different current motors such as generators and electric motors for effective functioning. The coils of the motor should be connected to complete an electrical circuit.

Major advantages of using carbon brushes

Let us see the 5 main advantages of using carbon brushes.

Feature a high melting point

Compared to copper and other materials, these brushes have high melting point with 3550-degree centigrade melting temperature. In a DC motor, the brush is connected to the commutator and chances of spark and friction occur when the motor functions. Carbon brushes can withstand this friction and heat.

Comprised of soft metal

The brushes are made of very soft metal, which does not damage the commutator during friction.

Featuring a negative temperature co-efficient

With negative temperature co-efficient, when there is an increase in the temperature, the resistance is reduced.

Flexibility

Brushes usually adopt to shapes due to the softness in material. When fixed with a commutator, it takes the shape of it.

Acts as a self-lubricator

It acts as a self-lubricator and does not require to grease or lubricate the motor.
